Tips for Parents

| Nutrition plays an important role in optimal school performance. With obesity and childhood obesity on
the rise, it is even more important to keep our kitchens stocked with healthy choices. Nutrition not only
affects the way children behave, but also their ability to learn. So remember, be a good role model and your
kids will fall into step. Before you know it, they will be bringing home A’s on those report cards! Here are
some important things to keep in mind during the school year and all year round:
|
|
- Start the day right with a nutritious breakfast. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day!
- If your child has morning snack time, make sure to pack a healthy snack. A piece of fresh fruit,
granola bar, or even baby carrots make a great snack.
- Send a power packed lunch with a variety of foods. Provide a mixture of whole grains, low-fat
dairy, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.
- Have kids help planning meals and snacks.
- Avoid junk food munchies after school by keeping nutritious snacks in your pantry like low fat
popcorn, trail mix, and pretzels.
- Make dinnertime the time for family time. Sit down together at the table and catch up on the day’s events!
