Tips for Parents
If you have a teen, or a child moving into those teen years, you know what a challenge they can be! They are faced with pressures from all areas, of which diet and exercise are only one. Fad diets, eating disorders, sports nutrition, and obesity are areas that your teen may be struggling with. Teens like to keep up with what’s popular and sometimes popular is not the way to go. If you see signs that your teen might be concerned with diet, exercise, and body weight, here are some suggestions to keep in mind:
  • Keep communication lines open. Let your teen know that you are there for them anytime.
  • Be open-minded and really listen to their concerns. They may seem trivial to you, but could be life-changing for your teen.
  • Remember, fad diets or diets that promise fast results may be too good to be true. Contact your health professional if your child is considering a new diet/exercise regimen.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle by taking a family walk after dinner.
  • Be savvy about the trends in diet and exercise. You may not realize that what your teen is doing could be dangerous.
