Tips for Parents
|
|
| Any food, even dessert, can fit into a healthy lifestyle. Here are tips on how to offer desserts to children: |
|
- Set the table with dessert
- Do not use dessert as a reward
- Have healthy dessert choices available
- Serve a variety of desserts throughout the week and keep portions small
- Don't always offer dessert
- If a child is forced to eat an entire meal before dessert, he or she may be full, but will likely eat the dessert anyway.
- If your child refuses to eat, withholding dessert is not the answer. The child will learn to value dessert above more nutritious
foods, which can alter eating patterns for life
- Healthy dessert ideas: fresh fruit with a dollop of whipping cream, yogurt smoothies, low fat frozen yogurt, baked apples with
cinnamon, grilled pineapple
