FAQs about the CPE Prior Approval Process for Program Providers

Q :  What is the application fee for Prior Approval?
A :  The fee is $10.00 per CPE hour requested. One CPE hour is equal to 60 minutes. Do not include breaks, lunch or Q&A periods longer than 10 minutes in your calculation.
Q :  Who do I make the check out to?
A :  Michigan Dietetic Association.
Q :  Who is the current contact person for CPE Prior Approval?
A :  In the state of Michigan, our MDA CPE Coordinator processes all Prior Approval Applications. For the current year (2008-2009) the Coordintor is Kelly Ramseyer, RD, 44764 Fenwick Dr, Canton MI 48188; 734-712-6647(W).
Q :  How does the new Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) system affect Prior Approval?
A :  The new PDP system requires that RDs and DTRs maintain their own CPE records. MDA will continue to provide Prior Approval for program providers. All RDs and DTRs will need to receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the program for their individual CPE records. Reporting forms have been discontinued. Note: see the MDA Forms Archive for a printable Certificate of Completion that can be used at CPE events.
Q :  What should the Certificates of Completion look like?
A :  Each certificate should provide AT LEAST this information: Title of the program, date of completion, provider organization name, participant’s name, the number of CEUs, the location (city/state) of the program, and a signature of the program provider. The MDA Forms Archive contains a printable Certificate of Completion for your convenience.
Q :  How long can a long-term program run on one application?
A :  The CDR reporting year runs from June 1 through to May 31. If a program is going to run for longer than that year you must reapply. Therefore, if you apply in January but the program runs through to October, you will need to reapply in June for the remaining months. You must also reapply when there are any changes to the program (for example a change in speakers or timeline).
Q :  Can RDs or DTRs get CPE credits by watching a webcast of an event?
A :  A webcast is considered a national event and would need to be approved through the CDR directly. You will want to contact them at least 6 weeks in advance.
Q :  Where do we apply for CPE prior approval if the event is being run in more than one state?
A :  Any national event must be approved through the CDR directly.
Q :  Do Certified Dietary Managers (CDMs) get CPE credits through CDR?
A :  No. CDR is for RDs and DTRs only. You can reach the Dietary Managers Association (DMA) via their website or by phone at 1-800-323-1908.
Q :  How long does the Prior Approval Process take?
A :  You should apply at least six (6) weeks in advance for prior approval of your program.
Q :  Can I get CPE credits approved after a program has run or if I am applying too late for Prior Approval?
A :  Yes, you can get CPE credits via the Subsequent Approval Process. Subsequent approval is done through CDR directly. You can download both individual and group subsequent approval reporting forms on the CDR website.
