Non-compete agreements? RD 8/8/2010

Hello! I was hoping some of you would have some insight into a situation I'm facing right now. I work for a mid-sized contract food-service management company that I generally like, and work with good people close to my home. I after almost a year of working for them I have been asked to sign non-compete agreement limiting me from any of their clients/accounts for 18 months, and 2 years if I were directly responsible for those clients/accounts. I'm not being offered anything other than continued employement (albeit with a good company). I've seen and plan again to see an attorney, and may have one possible employment option with good possibilities. Do you happen to know how pervasive these agreements are and their usual restrictions? If I leave my current company, might I likely be in for more of the same? Well, any insight would be much appreciated! Thank you!
