Delphine B. Rutkowski Memorial Scholarship

Delphine B. Rutkowski 1927-2000
Delphine Boguski Rutkowski was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1927 to Stephen
and Lottie Boguski. She was the youngest of four children and the apple of not
only her parents’ eye, but of her siblings. Delphine attended St. Francis
d’Assissi Grade School on the Westside of Detroit excelling in academics and
leadership. She was awarded a four year scholarship to the Felician Sisters’
Academy where she continued her love of academics and leadership, graduating
in 1946. Following graduation, Delphine worked as an Administrative Assistant
for the Steel Sales Company. On her 18th birthday, which also happened to be
Thanksgiving Day, Delphine met the love of her life – Arthur Rutkowski. They
married in October of 1948.
This scholarship was established following Delphine’s untimely and sudden death
from a stroke in October of 2000. She loved Dietitians and both the American
Dietetic Association and the Michigan Dietetic Association. At the time of her
death, she was preparing to attend for the 10th time, the House of Delegates’
and ADA Annual Meetings. She loved to audit the HOD meetings and marveled at
how the Delegates strove to represent their constituents in the many changes
that were facing the profession. The exhibits were also a favorite of hers
and her perspective as a consumer interested in reducing particularly fat and
cholesterol, plus her willingness to try new products, made her a favorite with
the exhibitors. She attended Education sessions and reviewed the information
given from a consumer view always looking for its fit in the real world.
Mom also frequently attended MDA and District Dietetic Association meetings and
activities earning her the nickname “MDA Mom”. Her outgoing personality, keen
mind and fantastic memory made her very popular and she was very proud of her
friendships with so many ADA and MDA members. Though not a Dietitian, she was
very keenly aware of the importance of good nutrition on health and was an
active ambassador in promoting Dietetics professionals.
Mom was a staunch advocate of education. Growing up in her household, my four
siblings and I knew that not only were we to achieve higher education, we
were to excel in our chosen professions and became active in our communities.
By example, Mom taught us that “to those whom much is given, much is expected.”
Mom’s strong commitment to education and her deep respect and love for Dietetics
Professionals made the establishment of this scholarship a natural. The
outpouring of grief at her death and the generosity of her many friends allow
us to award this scholarship to deserving students.
-Cinde Rutkowski
